Town Government
Monroe Boards & Commissions
What Boards & Commissions Are
Beyond the Select Board itself, Monroe’s governing happens on a handful of small boards, and here is the thing that makes a town this size unusual: the same few residents serve on more than one of them. The three members of the Select Board also sit on other town boards, including the Planning Board and the Board of Health, so one small group carries much of the town’s work. That is not a flaw. It is what it takes to run a town of about 118 people, and it means the distance between an ordinary resident and a seat at the table is very short.
Members are chosen at the annual town election or appointed by the Select Board, and the meetings are public.
Key Boards
- Select Board serves as the town’s chief executive and, in a town this small, its members also carry seats on other boards.
- Planning Board reviews land use and development in the town.
- Board of Health oversees public health rules and inspections.
Monroe maintains no town website; to ask about a board, an opening, or a meeting, call Town Hall at 413-424-5272.
How to Serve
- Ask what is open. Call Town Hall at 413-424-5272 to learn which seats are elected and which are appointed, and which are open now.
- Put your name forward. For an elected seat, get on the ballot at the annual town election; for an appointed one, tell the Select Board you are willing to serve.
- Serve: attend the public meetings and help make decisions for your town.
Serving on a board is one of the most direct ways to shape Monroe.
