John P. Phelan
Every school day, 4,358 Milton students report to the district’s six schools, and one office answers for all of them. John P. Phelan is the Interim Superintendent of Milton Public Schools, named to the role effective June 1, 2025. In December 2025 the School Committee extended his contract through the 2026-27 school year, and the search for a permanent superintendent begins in fall 2026. The Superintendent proposes the school budget, sets academic priorities, and runs the schools day to day. He is hired by and reports to the six elected members of the School Committee, which evaluates the superintendent’s performance through its own subcommittee.

The School Committee
Milton’s School Committee has six members, all elected town-wide to staggered three-year terms. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent who runs the schools day to day. Its meetings are public, which means a Milton student who shows up can speak.
