Milton Boards & Commissions

What Boards & Commissions Are

Beyond the Select Board and the School Committee, much of Milton’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions. The town lists more than fifty of them, covering everything from airplane noise to youth services. They review new development, hear zoning appeals, protect wetlands along the Neponset, and study every dollar Town Meeting is asked to spend. They are the rooms where an ordinary resident can have the most direct hand in a decision.

Most members are appointed by the Select Board or the Town Moderator and serve fixed terms. The meetings are public, and seats open up regularly.

Key Boards & Commissions

  • Planning Board shapes the town’s master plan and reviews development.
  • Board of Appeals hears requests to vary from the zoning bylaws.
  • Conservation Commission protects Milton’s wetlands and open space under state and local law.
  • Warrant Committee, fifteen residents appointed by the Town Moderator, studies every article on the Town Meeting warrant and publishes a recommendation before the vote.
  • Board of Health oversees public health for the town.
  • Commission on Disability works on accessibility and disability rights in town policies.

How to Serve

  1. Find an opening on the town’s boards and committees page.
  2. Apply. The volunteer application form is on the town website, and the Town Administrator’s office, 617-898-4845, can help you find the right fit.
  3. Interview if asked, and await appointment by the Select Board or the Town Moderator.
  4. Serve: attend the public meetings and help make decisions for your town.

Serving on a board is one of the most direct ways to shape Milton.
