Marshfield School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Dr. Patrick Sullivan

About 3,552 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Dr. Patrick Sullivan leads Marshfield Public Schools, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running a system of eight schools day to day. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which carries out an annual evaluation. Marshfield runs its own district for its own town, so unlike many South Shore communities there is no second town to share the decision with: the five people who hire the Superintendent are elected by Marshfield voters alone.

The School Committee

The Marshfield School Committee has five members serving staggered three-year terms, all elected town-wide, so a seat or two is on the ballot every spring. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent who runs the schools day to day. Each June it reorganizes and votes its own Chair, Vice Chair and Clerk. Meetings are held in school buildings and in the Seth Ventress Auditorium at 76 South River Street, and they are public, which means a Marshfield student who shows up can speak. The committee roster is posted on the district site.
