Michael S. Nelson
Marion runs its own elementary school, Sippican School, for about 342 students from Pre-K through grade 6, and it shares its older grades with two neighbors. Michael S. Nelson is the Superintendent of the Old Rochester Regional School District and School Union #55, which ties Marion together with Mattapoisett and Rochester. He proposes the school budgets, sets academic priorities, and runs the day to day of the schools. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected school committees, which carry out an annual evaluation. Marion voters elect their own five-member School Committee for Sippican School and also send members to the regional committee that runs grades 7 through 12.

The School Committee
The Marion School Committee has five members, elected town-wide to staggered three-year terms, and it oversees Sippican School for Pre-K through grade 6. The committee sets school policy, approves the school budget, and takes part in hiring and evaluating the Superintendent. It meets in a hybrid format at Sippican School, and the meetings are public, which means a Marion student who shows up can speak. Grades 7 through 12 are governed by a separate Old Rochester Regional committee that Marion shares with Mattapoisett and Rochester.
