Holden Legislators

Who Represents Holden

Five people speak for Holden above the town line, and there is no district boundary inside the town to check first. One state representative and one state senator carry the whole town in the Massachusetts Legislature, one member of Congress carries it in the U.S. House, and the Commonwealth’s two U.S. senators represent the entire state, Holden included. Between them they cover everything from a state road repair to a federal grant for your school.

State Senator

A state senator votes the state budget, files bills, and sits on the joint committees where most bills live or die. All of Holden sits inside the Worcester and Hampshire district, which means there is no district line to check before you write. Durant won a special election to the Senate in 2023 after more than a decade in the House representing the Sixth Worcester district, and he first reached the House by 56 votes, after the 2010 race there ended in a tie. If you ever wondered whether one vote can decide anything, that is a state senator whose career began inside a margin of fifty-six.

State Representative

Holden is not split. The entire town sits in the 1st Worcester House district, so one representative answers for every street in it.

A state representative files bills, votes the state budget, and can chase a state agency on a constituent’s behalf, which is often the fastest use of the office. Ferguson is a former speech-language pathologist who has spent more than a decade pushing to require insurers to cover cognitive rehabilitation therapy for survivors of acquired brain injury, and she also works on school transportation funding, which is a live question in a five-town regional district that buses students across a lot of road.

In Washington

All of Holden sits in the Second Congressional District, one of nine in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is represented in the U.S. Senate by Elizabeth Warren, the senior senator, and Edward J. Markey, the junior senator, both Democrats, and both of them represent you as much as any Holden voter.

McGovern has served in the U.S. House since 1997. He is the ranking member of the House Rules Committee, which he chaired from 2019 to 2023 and which sets the terms of debate for legislation reaching the House floor, and he co-chairs the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.
