How Everett got a new mayor

Van Campen won about 54 percent of the vote on November 4, 2025, unseating Carlo DeMaria, who had run the city since 2007. The final stretch of that campaign played out against a scandal. The state inspector general concluded that an extra six-figure “longevity” payment DeMaria had collected was improper, and the City Council answered with a unanimous no-confidence vote. Voters made the last call, and they made it clear. That is the whole point of an election: it is the one lever every resident can pull, and in Everett that November it moved.

Who Robert Van Campen is

Van Campen is a lawyer who has spent his career on the workers’ side, as a labor attorney for AFSCME, the union for public employees, and he served as both city solicitor and deputy mayor in nearby Melrose. Everett is home ground for him. He gave fourteen years to city government here earlier in his career, and in 2023 voters sent him back to the City Council to represent Ward 5, the seat he gave up the day he became mayor. He and his wife, Lisa, live in the city.

What the mayor actually controls

Everett runs on a strong-mayor system, which means the person in this office holds real executive power, not a ceremonial title. The mayor writes the first draft of the city budget, appoints the department heads who run everything from the police to public works, and sits by law on the School Committee. The eleven-member City Council passes the ordinances and controls the money, so the two branches have to deal with each other. But the agenda starts on the mayor’s desk.

Where Van Campen says he is starting

In his first weeks he named school overcrowding his top priority, calling packed classrooms “completely unacceptable in 2026” and promising to attack the problem alongside Superintendent William Hart. He also pledged to rebuild public trust after the scandal that ended his predecessor’s run, to diversify the command staff of the police department, and to guide new development in a way that keeps Everett affordable for working families. He took office next to a City Council and a School Committee that, for the first time in the city’s history, are each majority women.
