Dighton Boards & Commissions

What Boards & Commissions Are

Beyond the Board of Selectmen and the School Committee, much of Dighton’s governing happens on boards and commissions. They approve new development, hear zoning appeals, protect the wetlands along the Taunton River, weigh in on historic places, and guide services for residents. They are the rooms where an ordinary resident can have the most direct hand in a decision.

Some of these boards are elected by the town and some are appointed by the Board of Selectmen, and all of them serve fixed terms. The meetings are public, and seats open up regularly.

Key Boards & Commissions

  • Planning Board reviews subdivisions, site plans, and major development, and its members are elected by the town.
  • Zoning Board of Appeals hears variances and special permits.
  • Conservation Commission protects Dighton’s wetlands, rivers, and open space.
  • Finance Committee reviews the budget and advises Town Meeting on spending.
  • Board of Health oversees inspections, permits, and public health rules.
  • Board of Assessors and Sewer Commission are elected boards that set property values and run the town’s sewer system.

How to Serve

  1. Find an opening on the town’s boards and committees page, or an elected seat on the annual town ballot.
  2. Submit a letter of interest or application to the Board of Selectmen office, or take out nomination papers from the Town Clerk for an elected seat.
  3. Interview or run, then await appointment by the Board of Selectmen or election by the town.
  4. Serve: attend the public meetings and help make decisions for your town.

Serving on a board is one of the most direct ways to shape Dighton.
