School Committee & Superintendent

One District, Two Towns

Dennis does not have a school district. Dennis and Yarmouth have one, together. The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District runs every public school both towns send children to, from PreK through the regional high school, and it is governed by a single seven-member committee that the two towns elect separately. That is why the numbers on this page describe the district rather than Dennis alone, and why a Dennis voter’s ballot decides only some of the seats.

The Superintendent

Marc J. Smith, Ed.D.

About 2,905 students across Dennis and Yarmouth start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Marc J. Smith is the Superintendent of the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District. He proposes the district budget, sets academic priorities, and runs a system of six schools day to day, and he signs the superintendent’s newsletter that goes out to families through the district’s own website. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates him each year.

The School Committee

The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee has seven members serving staggered three-year terms. Of the seven now seated, three were elected by the voters of Dennis and four by the voters of Yarmouth, and the committee’s Chair is one of the Dennis members. The committee sets district policy, approves the district budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It meets at the district office at 296 Station Avenue in South Yarmouth, its meetings are public, and a Dennis student who shows up can speak.
