Darius Modestow
About 146 students start their day at the Conway Grammar School, and the person who answers for the district that runs it is not based in Conway at all. Darius Modestow is the superintendent shared by the Union 38 towns, Conway, Deerfield, Sunderland, and Whately, and by the Frontier Regional district that educates their older students together. He proposes the school budget, sets academic priorities, and runs the day-to-day work of the schools. The superintendent is hired by and reports to the school committees, which evaluate him each year. Conway shares him with three other towns, which is how a town of about 1,760 people affords a full district office: it splits the cost with its neighbors.

The School Committee
Conway keeps its own School Committee of five members, elected town-wide to staggered three-year terms, and it oversees the Conway Grammar School for PreK through grade 6. The committee sets policy for the school, approves its budget, and works with the shared Union 38 superintendent. Its meetings are public, held on the third Thursday of the month, which means a Conway student who shows up can speak. For grades 7 through 12, Conway is one of four towns on the separate Frontier Regional School Committee, which governs the shared middle and high school in South Deerfield.
