Clarksburg has 211 students, one school building, and its own school district, which raises an obvious question: how does a district that small afford a superintendent? The answer is that it shares one. Clarksburg belongs to the North Berkshire School Union, an arrangement that joins five towns (Clarksburg, Florida, Monroe, Rowe and Savoy) under a single superintendency office in North Adams, while each town keeps its own school committee and its own budget vote.
John Franzoni is the Superintendent of Schools for that union. He proposes the school budget to the Clarksburg School Committee, sets academic priorities, and runs the district day to day, with an assistant superintendent for student services and curriculum and a business administrator working out of the same office. He is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates him. What that means for a Clarksburg family is that the person who runs your school works for a committee of three neighbors you elected, and that committee’s budget is voted by Town Meeting.

The School Committee
The Clarksburg School Committee has three members, elected town-wide to three-year terms, and it is the body that sets district policy, approves the school budget before it goes to Town Meeting, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. Three members is small enough that a single resident with a case to make is talking to a majority. Its meetings are public, which means a Clarksburg student who shows up can speak.

One quirk worth knowing: Dan Haskins sits on both this committee and the Selectboard. He won the School Committee seat as a write-in candidate at the May 12, 2026 annual town election and was sworn to both offices on June 1, 2026.
