Dr. Jay Lang
About 5,100 Chelmsford students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Dr. Jay Lang has led Chelmsford Public Schools since 2015, and before that he spent 20 years with the Lowell Public Schools, 12 of them as Deputy Superintendent of Finance and Operations. He runs a system of eight schools. The Superintendent proposes the school budget, sets academic priorities, and is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee. His guiding line for the district is plain: all children can learn and achieve at high levels given the proper time and support.

The School Committee
Chelmsford’s School Committee has five members, all elected town-wide to three-year terms at the spring town election. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent who runs the schools day to day. Unlike a city, Chelmsford has no mayor sitting on the committee, so all five seats answer directly to the voters. The committee meets at the School Administration Building, and the meetings are public, which means a Chelmsford student who shows up can speak.
