School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Robin A. Millen, Ed.D.

About 1,644 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Dr. Robin A. Millen leads the Monomoy Regional School District, which Chatham shares with Harwich, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running four schools day to day. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates her against goals it publishes and votes on. Note what this means for the money: the school budget is the one large piece of town spending the Town Manager does not build. It comes from the Superintendent to the School Committee, and then to the same Town Meeting that votes everything else. Because the district is regional, that budget is voted in both Chatham and Harwich, and each town pays its assessed share.

The School Committee

The Monomoy Regional School Committee has eight voting members, four elected by Chatham voters and four by Harwich voters, because the two towns run their schools together as one regional district. The Chatham seats are on the Chatham ballot each spring, on staggered three-year terms, and one Chatham seat comes up in most years. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. Its officers are a Chair and a Vice Chair, and Chatham’s own Bradford Schiff chairs it. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursday evenings during the school year, they are public, and a Chatham student who shows up can speak.
