Brewster Legislators

Who Represents Brewster

Five people speak for Brewster above the town line, and there is no district boundary inside the town to check first. One state representative and one state senator carry the whole town in the Massachusetts Legislature, one member of Congress carries it in the U.S. House, and the Commonwealth’s two U.S. senators represent the entire state, Brewster included. Between them they cover everything from a state road repair to a federal grant for your school.

State Senator

A state senator votes the state budget, files bills, and sits on the joint committees where most bills live or die. Julian Cyr serves as the Senate’s Assistant Majority Whip and chairs the Joint Committee on Housing, where he authored the 2024 Affordable Homes Act’s Seasonal Community designation, housing policy tailored for the Cape and Islands, Brewster included. His district runs from the Outer Cape through Brewster to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. All of Brewster sits inside it, which means there is no district line to check before you write.

State Representative

Brewster is not split. The entire town sits in the 1st Barnstable House district, so one representative answers for every street in it.

A state representative files bills, votes the state budget, and can chase a state agency on a constituent’s behalf, which is often the fastest use of the office. Before Beacon Hill, Flanagan chaired the Select Board in neighboring Dennis, so he has sat on both sides of the local-state line, and his committee seats include the Joint Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries and the Joint Committee on Emergency Preparedness and Management, both of them committees a shellfishing coastal town has business before.

In Washington

All of Brewster sits in the Ninth Congressional District, one of nine in Massachusetts, which takes in the South Coast, the Cape and the Islands. Massachusetts is represented in the U.S. Senate by Elizabeth Warren, the senior senator, and Edward J. Markey, the junior senator, both Democrats, and both of them represent you as much as any Brewster voter.
