Town Government
Auburn School Committee & Superintendent
The Superintendent
Robert Skaza
Auburn’s superintendent has lived in Auburn for twenty five years and spent all twenty five of them working in a different city’s schools. Robert Skaza came to Marlborough Public Schools as a therapist and left it as its assistant superintendent, teaching eighth grade literacy and running a school along the way, and in July 2026 he took over the district his own daughter attends.
The job is the top of one chain and the bottom of another. About 2,444 Auburn students in five schools are the superintendent’s responsibility, and every principal, teacher and bus route in the district reports up through this office. At the same time the superintendent is the only employee the elected School Committee actually hires, which means the committee evaluates him and can replace him, and everything else about staffing is his to run. He proposes the school budget each year, and the size of that budget is then voted by Town Meeting like every other line.
That split is the useful thing to know if you are a student with a complaint. A rule inside one building is your principal’s. A district policy is the School Committee’s. How the district is run day to day is the superintendent’s. Sending a question to the wrong one of those three costs you weeks.

The School Committee
Auburn’s School Committee has five members, all elected town-wide to staggered three year terms, and it seats a student representative alongside them who reports at every meeting. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It reorganizes each May, right after the town election: on May 20, 2026 it elected Meghan McCrillis as Chair, taking over from Jessie Harrington, who had served on the committee since May 2014.

Rachel Ellen Girardi won the fifth seat for a three year term at the annual town election of May 19, 2026, and the Town Clerk’s certified return is where these five names and their terms come from.

Meetings & Participation
- When: Wednesday evenings, roughly twice a month, in the School Committee Room at 5 West Street.
- Agendas & minutes: posted on the town’s Agenda Center under School Committee, alongside every other town board.
- Public comment: every agenda carries a Citizens Comments item, and residents may address the committee with the chair’s permission.
- Students report too: the Student Representatives Report is a standing item on the agenda, so a student voice is built into the meeting rather than squeezed into it.

What this seat decides
Your schools
School Committee. Start times, the school calendar, bus routes and stops, the phone policy, athletics and activity fees, and the policies in the student handbook. It sets district policy, and the total size of the school budget is voted by Town Meeting.
Your principal and your superintendent. The principal for how a school rule works day to day in your building. The superintendent for how the whole district runs. The School Committee selects the superintendent, and the superintendent appoints the principals, so a question about any other staff member goes to the district, not to the board.
Curious how a bill becomes law, or how students can take on a civics project?
