About 1,086 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Peter W. Dillon leads the Berkshire Hills Regional School District, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running its schools day to day. West Stockbridge does not run its schools alone. It belongs to a regional district it shares with Great Barrington and Stockbridge, and the Superintendent is hired by and reports to a School Committee whose members are elected across all three towns. Note what this means for the money: the school assessment is the one large piece of West Stockbridge’s town spending the Town Administrator does not build. It comes from the Superintendent to the regional School Committee, and then to each town’s own Town Meeting, which votes its share.

The School Committee
The Berkshire Hills Regional School Committee has 10 seats, elected by the voters of the three member towns: five for Great Barrington, three for Stockbridge, and two for West Stockbridge. One Stockbridge seat is currently vacant. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It elects its own officers, and today the Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary are all Great Barrington members while West Stockbridge holds the Assistant Treasurer’s seat. Meetings are held through the school year on the calendar the district posts, and they are public, which means a West Stockbridge student who shows up can speak.
