Stefania Raschilla came to the job after more than two decades in the Springfield Public Schools, directly across the river: she started there as an elementary school teacher in 1999, became an assistant principal in 2007 and a principal in 2010, helped turn around a school the state had rated Level 4, and rose to Chief Instructional Officer in 2017. When West Springfield went looking for a superintendent, the School Committee researched each finalist’s record, visited their districts, weighed community feedback, and voted 6 to 1 to give her the job. She has led West Springfield Public Schools since May 2023. She proposes the school budget, sets academic priorities, and reports to the School Committee that hired her.

The School Committee
The West Springfield School Committee has seven seats, and one of them belongs to the Mayor. Six members are elected by the voters of the whole town to two-year terms, and the Mayor serves as the seventh by virtue of the office, a rule written into the town charter. The charter lets the committee elect any of its members as chair, including the Mayor, and the current committee did exactly that: Mayor William C. Reichelt chairs it, with Colleen Marcus as vice chair. The committee hires and evaluates the Superintendent, approves the school budget, and sets the policies that govern 3,838 students across eight schools.
