Who Represents Nantucket
Five people speak for Nantucket above the town line, and there is no district boundary inside the island to check first. One state representative and one state senator carry the whole town in the Massachusetts Legislature, one member of Congress carries it in the U.S. House, and the Commonwealth’s two U.S. senators represent the entire state, Nantucket included. Living thirty miles offshore makes those five unusually load-bearing: a ferry subsidy, a coastal resilience grant and an airport project all pass through them.
State Senator
Cape and Islands District · Democrat
Julian Cyr
State House: Room 111 · (617) 722-1570
Email: julian.cyr@masenate.gov
A state senator votes the state budget, files bills, and sits on the joint committees where most bills live or die. All of Nantucket sits inside the Cape and Islands district, which runs from Provincetown down the Cape and out to Martha’s Vineyard, Gosnold and this island, so there is no district line to check before you write. Senator Cyr serves as Assistant Majority Whip and sits on the joint committees on Public Health, Housing, Health Care Financing, Mental Health, Racial Equity, and Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy.
State Representative
Nantucket is not split. The entire island sits in the Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket House district, so one representative answers for every street on it.
Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket District · Democrat
Thomas Moakley
State House: Room 134 · (617) 722-2400
Email: thomas.moakley@mahouse.gov
A state representative files bills, votes the state budget, and can chase a state agency on a constituent’s behalf, which is often the fastest use of the office. This is one of the few House districts in Massachusetts you cannot drive across: it takes in Nantucket, all six Martha’s Vineyard towns and Gosnold, so its representative answers to islanders more than to anyone else. Representative Moakley sits on the House Committee on Federal Funding, Policy and Accountability and on the joint committees on the Judiciary, on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities, on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development, and on Advanced Information Technology, the Internet and Cybersecurity.
In Washington
All of Nantucket sits in the Ninth Congressional District, one of nine in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is represented in the U.S. Senate by Elizabeth Warren, the senior senator, and Edward J. Markey, the junior senator, both Democrats, and both of them represent you as much as any Nantucket voter.
9th Congressional District · Democrat
William R. Keating
Washington: 2372 Rayburn House Office Building · 202-225-3111
Representative Keating sits on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on Armed Services.
