Montgomery does not run a school. It is too small to, so it does what the hilltowns around it do: it joins with its neighbors. Montgomery is one of six towns in the Gateway Regional School District, which educates about 721 students from Blandford, Chester, Huntington, Middlefield, Montgomery, and Russell on a shared campus in Huntington. Melissa Matarazzo is the Superintendent of that district. She proposes the school budget, sets academic priorities, and runs the schools day to day, and she is hired by and reports to the regional School Committee, which the six towns elect and which evaluates her each year. Because the district is regional, a Montgomery family’s schools are governed jointly with five other towns, and Montgomery’s voice on that committee is the seat its own voters fill.

The School Committee
The Gateway Regional School Committee has fifteen seats, apportioned among the district’s six member towns, and members serve staggered three-year terms. It sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. The committee is chaired by Jason Forgue of Chester, and its Vice Chair, Peter DeGregorio, holds one of Montgomery’s two seats. Montgomery’s second seat is currently vacant, which is an opening a Montgomery resident can run to fill, because these seats are elected at the annual town election, not appointed.

- The budget: the district’s assessment to Montgomery still lands at the town’s own Town Meeting, where every registered voter can vote on it.
