Dr. Rebecca Phillips
About 44 students start their day at Hancock Elementary, in a town that keeps its own school rather than folding into a regional district. Dr. Rebecca Phillips is the Superintendent, shared with New Ashford and Lanesborough through School Union #70, the Shaker Mountain School District, a superintendency union in which each town keeps its own elected committee and its own school. Hancock runs the elementary grades in town and tuitions its older and specialized students out to Mount Greylock Regional, Richmond Consolidated, McCann Technical, and New Lebanon. The Superintendent proposes the school budget, sets academic priorities, and is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which carries out an annual evaluation.

The School Committee
The Hancock School Committee has five members elected town-wide, and it sets policy for the town’s own elementary school, approves its budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. Because Hancock is its own single-town district rather than part of a regional one, there is no separate regional committee: this one board answers for the school the town runs. Kayt Turner chairs the committee, and it meets the first Tuesday of each month, except July, at Hancock Elementary School.
