The Superintendent
Michael Henault
About 1,530 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Michael Henault is the Superintendent of the Central Berkshire Regional School District, which Dalton shares with six neighboring towns. He proposes the school budget, sets academic priorities, and runs the district’s five schools day to day. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates him against goals it publishes and votes on. Note what this means for the money. Because the district is regional, its budget is not simply one line in Dalton’s town budget. The seven member towns each vote an assessment toward it, and in Dalton that assessment goes to the same Town Meeting that votes everything else. So the school budget still reaches the floor where every registered voter is a member, even though the schools themselves are run across town lines.

The School Committee
The Central Berkshire Regional School Committee has fifteen members, apportioned among the seven towns that make up the district: Becket, Cummington, Dalton, Hinsdale, Peru, Washington and Windsor. Dalton, the largest, holds the most seats. Voters in each town elect their own members, so the people below answer to the district’s voters across town lines, not to Dalton alone. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. Its officers are a Chair and a Vice Chair. Its meetings are held in the evening, rotating among the district schools, and they are public, which means a Dalton student who shows up can speak.
