Blandford School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Melissa Matarazzo

About 721 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Melissa Matarazzo became Superintendent of the Gateway Regional School District in August 2025, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running a system of three schools day to day. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which carries out an annual evaluation. Because the district is regional, that committee answers to six towns at once, and no single town, Blandford included, can hire or fire the Superintendent on its own.

The School Committee

Gateway Regional is a six-town district, and its School Committee has fifteen seats apportioned among Blandford, Chester, Huntington, Middlefield, Montgomery, and Russell, so Blandford shares control of its schools with five neighbors. Members serve staggered three-year terms. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent who runs the schools day to day. It meets monthly at the Gateway complex on Littleville Road in Huntington, and the meetings are public, which means a Blandford student who shows up can speak.

Blandford voters elected Katherine McDonough to one of the town’s two seats on June 13, 2026, for a term that runs to 2029, and the district’s roster lists the other Blandford seat as vacant. When a Gateway seat opens between elections, the Blandford Selectboard and the town’s remaining committee member appoint someone jointly, and the appointee serves until the next annual town election. The full current roster is posted at grsd.org.
