About 2,764 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Brad Morgan is Superintendent of the North Middlesex Regional School District, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running a system of six schools day to day. Ashby does not run its own schools. It belongs to a three-town regional district shared with Pepperell and Townsend, so the Superintendent answers to voters across all three towns at once. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which carries out an annual evaluation, and carries the district’s budget to each town’s Town Meeting for the final vote.

The School Committee
The North Middlesex Regional School Committee has nine members serving staggered three-year terms, elected by the voters of the three member towns. Ashby elects one of the nine seats, currently held by Carla Lima; Pepperell and Townsend fill the rest. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent who runs the schools day to day. Its meetings are public, which means an Ashby student who shows up can speak, even on a committee whose other eight members answer to two neighboring towns.
